Stephanie Elgersma
Puppet Director, Designer/Maker
Vancouver, BC
Stephanie started her career in Vancouver, graduating from the acting program at Studio 58. She then shifted her attention to puppetry and moved to London (UK) to pursue this goal. Her curiosity has lead to work in all aspects of puppetry: puppet directing, puppet making, and puppeteering.
As a puppeteer, she studied with puppetry icons such as Sue Buckmaster, Mervyn Millar, Sandglass Theatre, Pickled Image, and Blind Summit. She has puppeteered for House of Cats Theatre, a music video for Alexis Taylor (London), and various companies in Vancouver and Calgary.
As a maker, she interned with Oli Smart and worked for Birmingham Rep and Wilton’s Music Hall. The majority of her making work has been with Nick Barnes Puppet Studio, where she assisted on shows for Les Petits, The Old Vic, and Disney Paris.
Since returning to Vancouver in 2021, she has made puppets across Canada: Brock University, The NAC, Carousel Theatre, Long Grass Studio and Firehall Arts Centre. But her greatest excitement is to work with companies as a puppet director, recently working with Carousel Theatre, Brock University, Little Onion and Firehall. She is passionate about advocating for puppetry in Canada. She also teaches puppet making at Studio 58.
